Migration Engineer

St. Louis, Missouri | Contract

Please let me know if you have any questions at all! Some additional detail about the position below.

  • Role is remote. We don’t expect a need for travel.
  • We are looking for people who can work nighttime maintenance windows as needed. Verizon is going through a bunch of migrations and the schedule is complicated. Whether or not there is nighttime work any given week involves a lot of dependencies. But we expect the pace of migrations to increase.
  • The main job is IOS-XR implementation work on the NCS5500 platform. Primary technologies involved are BGP, ISIS, L2/L3/EVPN, Segment Routing, MPLS. The general process involves working with Verizon (and often another vendor) to create site specific mops based on a golden template. The mops get reviewed with all interested parties and then implemented in maintenance windows over the course of several consecutive days. Because the mops are pretty complicated/involved and have cross vendor dependencies, we expect the engineers doing the execution to have a good understanding of the mop rather than simply being there to copy and paste config onto the box. Depending on abilities of the engineer and the constraints of the schedules, the engineer may be the one working with Verizon to create and review the site-specific mop (daytime work prior to the maintenance windows). In addition to the configuration work, there is testing that happens in the maintenance window that the engineer will participate in. Finally, we are also looking for people who have some ability to triage problems that may occur in the window. Beyond all the above, our team handles day 2 business continuity services on the network and there may be opportunity to participate in some of that work depending on time availability.
  • My general assessment of the position is that there is a huge opportunity to learn a lot. The customer is a sophisticated service provider deploying a new network based on leading edge technology. We have some very experienced and smart people on our team who are great to work with and will help bring new team members up to speed. While there will some nighttime work involved, it is definitely not a job where you are just doing a bunch of repetitive cut and paste of configuration. Anyone joining the team will have the opportunity to develop expert level knowledge of service provider routing technologies.
