On-Premises OpenShift Platform Engineer (Hybrid, 3 days onsite)
Location: San Jose, CA 95110
Length: 24 month contract (potential extension)
Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Cloud Platform Engineer with strong Red Hat OpenShift and Linux systems engineering expertise to support a net-new OpenShift platform implementation within an on-premises datacenter environment.
This role will focus on designing, building, and operationalizing OpenShift clusters on bare metal infrastructure while partnering closely with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) teams and program leadership to ensure a reliable, scalable, and secure enterprise platform.
The ideal candidate is a delivery-focused engineer who can operate independently, build infrastructure from the ground up, and troubleshoot complex platform and systems issues in large-scale environments.
Responsibilities:
OpenShift Platform Engineering

Design, deploy, and manage enterprise-scale Red Hat OpenShift clusters in on-prem datacenter environments.

Build and configure highly available, scalable, and secure OpenShift platforms.

Implement cluster lifecycle management, including installation, upgrades, patching, and scaling.

Configure platform components including networking, ingress, storage, and security policies.
Infrastructure Build & Automation
-
Provision and configure bare metal infrastructure to support OpenShift clusters.
-
Perform bare metal provisioning using IPMI and related tools.

Build and automate infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or similar.

Integrate OpenShift with virtualization platforms such as VMware.

Support CI/CD and GitOps-driven platform deployment processes.
Linux Systems Engineering
-
Provide advanced Linux system administration (RHEL preferred).

Bootstrap and configure operating systems and platform environments.
-
Troubleshoot complex kernel, networking, and storage issues.

Optimize OS-level configurations for performance, reliability, and security.
Reliability & Operations
-
Partner with SRE teams to implement monitoring, alerting, and platform reliability practices.

Establish observability through logging, metrics, and tracing tools.
-
Support incident response, root cause analysis, and platform remediation.

Ensure platform resiliency, performance tuning, and capacity planning.
Security & Compliance
-
Implement RBAC, security policies, and compliance controls within OpenShift clusters.

Harden systems according to enterprise security standards.

Support vulnerability management and patch governance.
Required Qualifications:
-
3+ years of hands-on experience with Red Hat OpenShift (OCP 4.x preferred).

5+ years of Linux systems engineering experience (RHEL strongly preferred).

Experience building OpenShift clusters in on-prem datacenter environments.

Strong understanding of Kubernetes architecture and container platforms.

Experience with bare metal provisioning and infrastructure build-out (IPMI or similar).

Solid networking knowledge including:

Experience with enterprise storage platforms:

CSI drivers

Experience working with virtualization platforms such as VMware.

Hands-on experience with automation and IaC tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or GitOps frameworks.

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
